GRSJ Graduate Student Conference – Call for proposals

E(merge)nce: Expanding Interdisciplinary Approaches to Feminism

Call for Proposals

The Graduate Student Association at the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice at the University of British Columbia invites graduate scholars to submit Abstracts for presentations at an interdisciplinary Graduate Student Conference entitled E(merge)nce: Expanding Interdisciplinary Approaches to FeminismThe conference will be held on March 4 from 10am-5pm at the Liu Institute for Global Issues on UBC’s Vancouver campus.

Keynote Speaker: Ivan Coyote.

Ivan Coyote is an award-winning writer and storyteller and author of six collections of short stories, one novel, three CDs and four short films. Ivan brings a unique and moving perspective to the discussion around gender identity and sexuality by combining her own brand of “kitchen table stories” with her personal experiences of growing up in Whitehorse and living in East Vancouver.

Our conference aims to explore the expansion of the discussion of gender, race, sexuality and social justice into new and emerging academic disciplines and non-academic realms of study. All papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, so this conference also provides an opportunity for publication.

In addition to submissions for academic papers, we also strongly encourage submissions for creative and innovative presentations, such as artwork, poetry, fiction or short film. Our conference will consist of several academic panels, addressing the following themes:

  • Indigenous, anti-colonial and/or Critical Race Studies,
  • Law and social justice,
  • Eco-feminism and sustainability,
  • Cultural and media studies,
  • Queer theory and
  • Memory studies

We welcome submissions on other topics that speak to our conference theme.

Each panelist will be granted 15 minutes for their presentation.

Please send abstracts of 500 words and a working title of your presentation (either creative and/or academic), as well as a short (max 200 words) biography to Brenna Meade-Clift at grsjconference2013 [at] gmail [dot] com by February 10th, 2013.
