EDGES member Melissa Plisic has been featured by the University of British Columbia Okanagan News in an Alumni Spotlight article! Congratulations, Melissa!
Melissa is an alumni of the Cultural Studies and Sociology programs at UBC Okanagan. The article details Melissa’s decision to pursue a degree at UBC Okanagan, and how the recognition of personal experience and creative projects as legitimate forms of knowledge led them to to use a zine format for final class projects, over the more common essay. “With this format, I was able to express some part of myself. It was refreshing to make something with my own hands and to get away from my computer screen. There are things that I can’t convey in an essay using just words, so using a visual aspect to get my points across was important to these final projects.” Melissa also notes that the jargon commonly found in academic publications can be inaccessible for many people, and the creation of a zine was a tool to share their knowledge in a more accessible way.
