During a recent trip to South Africa, Leila Harris was a panelist at the Municipal Services Project International Conference in Cape Town, titled “Putting Public in Public Services: Research, Action and Equity in the Global South”. The objectives of this conference were to bring together researchers, activists, labour representatives, development practitioners and policy makers from around the world working to promote progressive public services, with an emphasis on health, water and electricity. Leila’s talk, titled “Assessing states and evaluating publics: Narratives of service delivery in Accra and Cape Town”, outlined the work that has been done by the EDGES team on the Comparative Water Governance in African Cities Research Project, emphasizing preliminary results of a survey that was conducted on these themes in 2012.

Dr Harris is also scheduled to give a talk at the upcoming Environmental Justice and Equitable Access to Natural Resources Workshop at Purdue University in late April. Among the participants of this workshop are Professor Julian Agyeman from Tufts University, Gerald Shively from Purdue University, Fenda Akiwumi from the University of South Florida, Rebecca Hardin from the University of Michigan, Sharlene Mollett of the University of Toronto, and others. Leila will speak as part of the Environmental Justice and Access to Basic Resources Panel scheduled for April 25th. The full day of events is open to the public.
