Tariq Harney

Tariq Harney is a PhD student and researcher at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and a member of the EDGES Research Collaborative. Under the supervision of Professor Leila Harris, Tariq’s research explores the politics of affect, and the role of storytelling in environmental and water justice struggles in Sicily Italy. He is also part of a UBC Center for Climate Justice project examining right-wing environmental governance policies across Canada, Argentina and New Zealand. 

Tariq holds a BA and Masters in  Anthropology from the University of Toronto, where his research focused on exploring the imperatives, strategies and roles of climate activists, NGOs and academia in environmental justice and fossil fuel divestment organizing.

Tariq also serves as thee Chief research Officer at the youth-led non-profit Break The Divide, where his work focuses on building social and emotional resilience to the climate crisis through climate education.

Outside of academia, you can find Tariq playing (and watching) hockey, hiking, skiing, reading and cooking his favourite pastas.
